The gateway to Rajasthan and the home of Jaipur Taxi Wala, Jaipur is where most Rajasthan tours begin — and for very good reason. Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur was among the first planned cities in India, its grid-like old city painted in a distinctive terracotta pink that earns it its famous nickname. The city contains two UNESCO World Heritage Sites and offers more sightseeing per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in India.
Amber Fort (Amer Fort) is the crown jewel — a hilltop fortress of stunning complexity, its courtyards, palaces, and mirror halls reflecting the apex of Rajput architectural ambition. Jantar Mantar, the largest stone astronomical observatory in the world, was built by the same Maharaja who built the city and still accurately predicts celestial events to this day. Hawa Mahal, the five-storey Palace of Winds with its 953 latticed windows, is one of the most photographed facades in India. The City Palace, still home to the Jaipur royal family, blends Rajasthani and Mughal architecture across a sprawling complex of courtyards, museums, and galleries.

Set on the edge of the Thar Desert with the colossal Mehrangarh Fort rising 122 metres above the old city, Jodhpur is perhaps the most dramatic city in all of Rajasthan. The old city's houses are famously painted in a thousand shades of blue — a tradition that began as a cooling technique and evolved into the defining identity of the city.
Mehrangarh Fort is simply one of the finest forts in all of India. Owned by the Jodhpur royal family to this day, it contains an extraordinary museum of weapons, royal palanquins, paintings, and costume, plus sweeping views of the blue city below that justify every step of the climb. Umaid Bhawan Palace — partly a luxury hotel, partly a museum, partly a still-functioning royal residence — is a masterpiece of art deco and Indo-Saracenic architecture built between 1928 and 1943. Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph built for Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, is Jodhpur's answer to the Taj Mahal in miniature — serene, luminous, and heartbreakingly beautiful.
Jodhpur's food scene is equally remarkable. The city claims the origin of the Mirchi Bada (the fiery batter-fried green chilli snack), the Makhaniya Lassi (a rich, saffron-infused yoghurt drink), and the famous Mawa Kachori — a flaky pastry filled with sweetened mawa that is worth the entire drive to Jodhpur on its own.

Called the Venice of the East and the City of Lakes, Udaipur consistently ranks among the most beautiful cities in India and among the most romantic cities in the world. Ringed by the Aravalli hills and built around a series of shimmering lakes, it is a city of white marble palaces, flower-strewn ghats, lakeside temples, and a pace of life that feels deliberately, pleasurably slow.
Lake Pichola is the soul of Udaipur — a 17th-century artificial lake whose shores are lined with ghats, temples, havelis, and the grand City Palace. A sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola is one of the great travel experiences of India, the water turning pink and gold as the City Palace reflects on its surface. The City Palace itself is the largest royal complex in Rajasthan, a labyrinthine construction of courts, towers, pavilions, and museums built over three centuries by successive Mewar rulers. Jag Mandir, the island palace in the middle of the lake, is where the young Mughal prince Shah Jahan once found refuge — and where some say he found the inspiration for the Taj Mahal.
Fateh Sagar Lake, Bagore Ki Haveli (with its extraordinary museum of Mewari culture and evening dance performances), Saheliyon Ki Bari (the Garden of Maids), and Sajjangarh Palace (the Monsoon Palace, perched high on a hill) round out Udaipur's remarkable portfolio.
The drive from Jodhpur to Udaipur also passes two extraordinary monuments: Kumbhalgarh Fort, whose 36-km perimeter wall is second in length only to the Great Wall of China, and the Ranakpur Jain Temples, whose 1,444 intricately carved marble pillars (no two identical) rank among the finest examples of medieval temple architecture in the world.

Rising from the Thar Desert like a mirage made real, Jaisalmer is one of the most extraordinary places on earth. The entire city is built from yellow Jaisalmer stone — a warm-golden sandstone that makes every building, every wall, every lane glow like burnished gold in the afternoon sun. And at its heart, rising from a rocky ridge 80 metres above the desert floor, stands the living Jaisalmer Fort — one of the few forts in the world that is still fully inhabited, home today to around 3,000 people.
Inside the fort, narrow lanes wind between ancient temples, palaces, and havelis, the walls carved with a filigree-like delicacy that seems impossible in stone. Outside the fort, the Patwon Ki Haveli — a row of five connected mansions whose facades are carved so finely they resemble lacework — and Salim Singh Ki Haveli display the extraordinary wealth and artistry of Jaisalmer's medieval merchant class.
But Jaisalmer's greatest attraction lies outside the city walls, in the desert itself. Sam Sand Dunes, 42 km from the city centre, is where Rajasthan's desert tourism reaches its peak — a vast ocean of sweeping dunes where you can ride a camel at sunset, watch folk musicians perform against the darkening sky, sleep in a luxury tented camp, and wake at dawn to a silence so complete it fills you up. This is the experience that stays with you long after every photograph has faded.

Sitting in the northern reaches of the Thar Desert, Bikaner is Rajasthan's great underrated city — still relatively unhurried by tourism, still deeply authentic, still full of surprises. Its Junagarh Fort, built in 1588 and never conquered in battle, is arguably the finest example of late-Rajput and Mughal architecture in Rajasthan, its interiors a succession of increasingly ornate palaces, temples, and audience halls filled with exquisite tilework, mirror inlay, and glass paintings.
Bikaner is also home to the Karni Mata Temple at Deshnok — the extraordinary temple where over 25,000 rats are venerated as the reincarnations of the goddess's devotees and wander freely through the shrine complex. It is one of the most genuinely unique pilgrimage experiences in India, utterly unlike anything else on any itinerary. The city is also home to Asia's largest Camel Research and Breeding Farm, where you can watch (and ride) some of the finest camels in the subcontinent, and to Bikaneri bhujia — the spiced, crispy noodle-snack that has been produced here for over a century and remains the city's proudest culinary export.

Ajmer Sharif Dargah — the tomb of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti — is one of the holiest shrines in the Islamic world and draws millions of devotees of every faith. The dargah's atmosphere, especially on a Thursday evening when Qawwali devotional music fills the air, is unlike anything else in India. Pushkar, by contrast, is a tiny, sacred Hindu town wrapped around a holy lake, its 52 ghats alive with pilgrims, and its one extraordinary temple dedicated to Lord Brahma — one of very few in the world.
Located in the Sawai Madhopur district, around 180 km from Jaipur, Ranthambore National Park is one of the best places in the world to see Bengal tigers in the wild. The park's tigers are famously bold, having grown comfortable around safari jeeps, and sightings are more reliable here than at almost any other tiger reserve in India. The park also contains the atmospheric ruins of Ranthambore Fort — a 10th-century fortification that the tigers now stalk through — plus abundant populations of leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 300 species of birds.

The only true hill station in Rajasthan, Mount Abu sits at 1,220 metres in the southern Aravalli ranges and serves as the state's cool green antidote to the desert heat. It is primarily visited for the Dilwara Jain Temples — five temples whose white marble interiors feature carvings of such mind-boggling intricacy that they rank among the finest examples of marble craftsmanship in the world. The Nakki Lake at the town's heart, the Guru Shikhar peak (the highest in the Aravallis), and the Achalgarh Fort round out Mount Abu's attractions.

Begin at Hawa Mahal — Jaipur's iconic Palace of Winds, built in 1799 with 953 latticed windows so the royal women could observe the street life below without being seen. The building's five-storey facade in pink sandstone, resembling a honeycomb or a crown, is one of the most distinctive architectural images in India. Climb to the upper levels for panoramic views over the old city.
From Hawa Mahal, walk or drive to the City Palace — a working royal palace, museum, and courtyard complex that has been the seat of the Jaipur royal family since the city's founding. The Mubarak Mahal (Guest Palace), the Chandra Mahal (Moon Palace), the armory, and the extraordinary collection of royal costumes and treasures make this easily a two-hour visit.
Adjacent to the City Palace stands Jantar Mantar — Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II's extraordinary open-air stone observatory, completed in 1734. Its 19 instruments, including the world's largest stone sundial (the Samrat Yantra), were used for charting planetary positions, predicting eclipses, and measuring time with an accuracy that would not be matched by European instruments for another century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most genuinely fascinating places in Jaipur.
In the evening, explore the Johri Bazaar and the surrounding lanes of the old city — a riot of colour, craft, and commerce where Jaipur's legendary gemstone dealers, textile merchants, and jewellers have traded for three centuries.
Dinner: Try Laxmi Misthan Bhandar (LMB) for traditional Rajasthani thali — dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, and pyaaz ki kachori.
Day two is dedicated to Jaipur's most spectacular monuments — and a few that most visitors miss.
The day begins early with a drive to Amber Fort (Amer Fort), 11 km from the city centre. Set high in the Aravalli hills above the town of Amer, this 16th-century masterpiece of Rajput and Mughal architecture is the most visited monument in Rajasthan. The approach — up a steep ramp flanked by elephant statues, through the Sun Gate into the Jaleb Chowk courtyard — builds atmosphere with every step. Inside, the Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors), whose ceiling is encrusted with thousands of convex mirror fragments that catch and multiply a single candle flame into a thousand stars, is the most dazzling single room in Rajasthan. The Ganesh Pol gateway, painted with extraordinary murals, and the Sukh Niwas (Hall of Pleasure) with its marble water channel, are equally remarkable.
Spend at least two hours at Amber. The fort rewards slow exploration — every courtyard reveals another courtyard, every corridor another painted wall, another carved screen, another unexpected view of the hills below.
After Amber, drive a short distance to photograph the Jal Mahal — the 18th-century Water Palace, which sits in the middle of Man Sagar Lake and seems to float on the water's surface. The palace is currently closed to visitors inside, but the view from the lakeside road is one of the most photographed in Rajasthan.
In the afternoon, make the short drive up to Nahargarh Fort — the oldest of Jaipur's three hill forts, built in 1734. Its battlements offer the finest panoramic view of the entire city, and in the evening, the silhouette of the fort against the darkening sky above a twinkling Jaipur below is the best sunset in Rajasthan. The Albert Hall Museum, Jaipur's oldest museum with its remarkable collection of Egyptian mummies, miniature paintings, and decorative arts, is worth an hour in the afternoon.
Dinner: Handi Restaurant near the old city for authentic Rajasthani non-veg, or Peacock Rooftop Restaurant near Hawa Mahal for a view-with-food experience.
An early morning departure takes you on a 2.5-hour scenic drive through the Aravalli hills to Ajmer — one of India's most important pilgrimage cities, sacred to Muslims across the subcontinent and the world.
Begin at Ajmer Sharif Dargah — the tomb of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the 12th-century Sufi saint whose message of universal love and compassion transcended every religious boundary. The dargah's golden dome, its marble courtyards, its cauldrons of food offered to the poor, and the pervading atmosphere of devotion make this one of the most moving experiences in all of Rajasthan. Spend an hour here, and allow yourself to sit and simply absorb the atmosphere.
From the Dargah, visit Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra — a 12th-century mosque of extraordinary architectural beauty, built in just two-and-a-half days according to legend, its arched screen of intricate calligraphy one of the finest examples of early Indo-Islamic architecture in India. Visit the Nasiyan (Red) Temple — a Jain temple whose gold-plated interior diorama of Jain cosmological mythology is among the most spectacular interiors in Rajasthan. A brief stop at Ana Sagar Lake offers a peaceful stroll through the Mughal-era Daulat Bagh gardens before lunch.
After lunch in Ajmer, drive 17 km over the Nag Pahar mountain pass — one of Rajasthan's most beautiful short drives — into Pushkar. Spend the afternoon at the Brahma Temple and walking the 52 Ghats of Pushkar Lake, the sacred water reflecting the surrounding Aravalli hills in the late afternoon light. Browse the colourful Pushkar Bazaar for block-print fabrics, silver jewellery, and natural rose attar before your driver returns you to Jaipur.
This is one of the great drives in Rajasthan — approximately 330 km southwest via NH48, through the open plateau country of the Marwar region, the landscape slowly becoming drier, redder, and more elemental as Jaipur falls behind and the Thar Desert begins to assert itself. Travel time is approximately 5 hours with a stop.
Arrive in Jodhpur by early afternoon and head directly to Mehrangarh Fort — and prepare to be overwhelmed. The ascent through seven successive gates, each marking a different Rajput victory, builds to a hilltop citadel that is quite simply one of the finest forts in India. Give it at least two hours: the museum is outstanding, the views from the ramparts are breathtaking, and the palace interiors — the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal — are dazzling. Watch the sunset from the fort's ramparts as the blue city spreads out below you in the last light.
If time and energy allow, the evening is perfect for a walk through the winding blue lanes of the old city beneath the fort — stopping at Sardar Market (the city's main bazaar, centred around the Clock Tower) for evening street food: Mirchi Bada, Mawa Kachori, and the legendary Makhaniya Lassi.
Begin Day 5 with Jodhpur's two great monuments that are not Mehrangarh. Jaswant Thada — the white marble memorial built in 1899 for Maharaja Jaswant Singh II — is a place of extraordinary peace, its thin marble panels translucent in the morning light, the surrounding gardens and terraced pool perfectly quiet. Then visit Umaid Bhawan Palace — one of the largest private residences in the world, completed in 1943, its art deco grandeur set against formal gardens. The public museum wing contains an extraordinary collection of royal clocks, vintage cars, and Maharajas-era memorabilia.
By midday, begin the 280 km drive to Jaisalmer — one of the most scenic drives in all of Rajasthan as the landscape gradually surrenders to the Thar Desert. Arrive in the Golden City in the late afternoon. Check in and spend the evening exploring the narrow lanes of Jaisalmer Fort at their most atmospheric, the golden sandstone glowing in the last light of the day.
Day 6 is perhaps the most varied and unforgettable day of the entire 7-day tour. Begin in the morning exploring Jaisalmer Fort properly — visiting the Jain Temples within the fort (a cluster of seven temples built between the 12th and 16th centuries, their white marble interiors displaying the same extraordinary devotion to carved detail as Dilwara at Mount Abu), the Royal Palace (Raj Mahal), and the bustling lanes of the inhabited fort.
After the fort, spend time at Patwon Ki Haveli — the grandest of Jaisalmer's merchant mansions, a row of five interconnected havelis built in the 19th century, whose facades are carved so elaborately they seem to defy the nature of stone. Then visit Gadisar Lake — a 14th-century reservoir just outside the city walls, its banks lined with temples and ghats, its morning light absolutely magical for photography.
The afternoon and evening belong to the Sam Sand Dunes, 42 km into the desert. Your Jaipur Taxi Wala driver will bring you to the dunes in time for a camel ride at golden hour — the light in these last hours before sunset is the extraordinary, warm amber that every photograph of the Thar Desert tries to capture. Folk musicians play khartal, morchang, and rawanhatta as the sun goes down, and the deep silence that follows — when the musicians pause and the desert night begins — is something no photograph and no description can fully prepare you for. The return journey from Jaisalmer to Jaipur (approximately 570 km, 8-9 hours with stops) is itself a passage through some of the most beautiful desert and semi-arid landscape in India. The absolute peak period — and the time when Rajasthan is at its most extraordinary — runs from mid-October through mid-February. Nights are cool, days are warm but never oppressive, and the festival calendar fills with colour and celebration.
Pushkar Camel Fair (October/November): The world's largest camel fair transforms the tiny holy town into a rolling spectacle of 50,000 camels, traders, pilgrims, folk performers, and travelers from every corner of the planet. The sight of the dunes covered with camels and lit fires at night is genuinely unforgettable. Book your Rajasthan tour and Pushkar accommodation 2–3 months in advance if your trip coincides with the fair.
Jaipur Literature Festival (January): The world's largest free literary festival takes over the Diggi Palace in Jaipur every January, drawing thousands of authors, intellectuals, and literary enthusiasts. Combining this with your Jaipur sightseeing makes for an extraordinary cultural trip.
Desert Festival, Jaisalmer (January/February): Three days of camel races, folk performances, turban-tying competitions, fire dancers, and the famous Mr. Desert competition against the backdrop of Sam Sand Dunes. One of Rajasthan's most vivid festivals.
Teej Festival (July/August): Celebrated across Rajasthan (most spectacularly in Jaipur and Udaipur) as a celebration of the monsoon season and of married women. Processions of women in green, festivals of swings, and green-themed decorations everywhere.
Gangaur Festival (March/April): One of Rajasthan's most important women's festivals, celebrating the goddess Gauri (Parvati). Udaipur's Gangaur celebration — with its royal procession across Lake Pichola — is among the most beautiful festival experiences in India.
Rajasthan's cuisine is a product of its desert geography — a cuisine built to sustain life in a land where water and fresh vegetables were historically scarce, but where spice, dairy, and grain were abundant. It is one of the richest and most distinctive regional cuisines in India.
Dal Baati Churma — the defining dish of Rajasthan. Hard wheat balls (baati) baked over a fire until golden and hollow, cracked open and drenched in ghee, served alongside a spiced lentil dal and churma (a coarsely ground sweetened wheat crumble). Every Rajasthani family has its own version, and every version is deeply satisfying.
Laal Maas — Rajasthan's most famous meat dish. A fiery red mutton curry made with mathania dried red chillies from Jodhpur, slow-cooked with yoghurt and whole spices. It is not gentle. It is magnificent.
Gatte Ki Sabzi — gram flour dumplings simmered in a tangy, spiced yoghurt-based gravy. A vegetarian staple and one of the most comforting things in Rajasthani cooking.
Ker Sangri — a wild-harvested desert ingredient unique to Rajasthan: dried ker berries and sangri beans cooked with mustard oil and dried red chillies. Extraordinary with bajra roti.
Pyaaz Ki Kachori — Jodhpur's gift to the Indian breakfast table. A flaky, deep-fried pastry filled with spiced onion filling, best eaten fresh from the oil with green chutney and tamarind sauce.
Mirchi Bada — large green chillies battered and deep-fried, a Jodhpur street food that is simultaneously terrifying and addictive.
Mawa Kachori — a sweet kachori filled with sweetened khoya and nuts, the pride of Jodhpur's sweet shops.
Ghewar — Jaipur's signature festive sweet: a disc-shaped, latticed deep-fried batter soaked in sugar syrup and topped with malai and saffron. Available primarily around the Teej festival but worth seeking out year-round.
Jaipur: Gemstones and jewellery (Johri Bazaar), block-printed and hand-dyed textiles (Sanganer and Bagru), blue pottery (unique to Jaipur, made without clay), lac bangles and Kundan jewellery, mojri (leather-embroidered shoes), miniature paintings.
Jodhpur: Antiques and vintage furniture (the area around Mehrangarh), bandhani (tie-dye) textiles, iron and brass decorative items, leather goods, Jodhpur breeches (the riding trousers that the world named after this city).
Udaipur: Miniature paintings in the Mewar style, silver jewellery, wooden puppets and crafts, Pichhwai paintings (devotional art from Nathdwara), handmade paper products, Saree weaving.
Jaisalmer: Camel leather goods, mirrored embroidery textiles (from the local Jat and Meghwal communities), silver jewellery, stone and brass artifacts, carpets and shawls.
Bikaner: Bikaneri bhujia (the original and still the best), Usta kala (gold embossment on camel leather), carpets and durries, painted furniture.
Dress code at religious sites: Both Hindu temples and the Dargah Sharif require covered shoulders and legs. Carry a dupatta or light scarf. At the Dargah, heads must be covered — cloth is available at the entrance. Remove leather items at Jain temples and at the Brahma Temple.
Sun and heat: Between November and March, Rajasthan can be cold at night (below 10°C in desert areas) but warm during the day. Carry a light jacket for early mornings and evenings. In summer, a hat, sunscreen SPF 50+, and consistent hydration are essential.
Water: Drink only bottled or filtered water. Your Jaipur Taxi Wala cab includes complimentary water bottles. In restaurants, request sealed bottles.
Money: Carry cash for temple offerings, small purchases, and rural areas. Most city restaurants, hotels, and major shops now accept UPI and credit cards.
Photography: Photography restrictions at religious sites vary — always ask before pointing a camera at priests, ongoing rituals, or the inside of sanctuaries. Photography is not allowed inside Amber Fort's Sheesh Mahal without a permit.
Bargaining: Expected and entirely normal in bazaars and with street vendors. Not appropriate at fixed-price shops or government emporiums.
